How Language Shapes Our Perception of Reality

https://getpocket.com/explore/item/how-language-shapes-our-perception-of-reality?utm_source=pocket-newtab

This article discusses how a language can change the way people think. It starts by going over how different languages have different words for colors which might mean that wed can only see colors that we have words for. Then it goes on to explain that people remember things differently based on their language. Lastly, it explains that people who learned more languages worked better at a company in Japan because the employees could all communicate with each other. I could relate this article to something I learned more about in my Business Communications class. We learned about how people from different cultures thought about things differently such as time. An example of this is how saying in the morning in English is around or after sunrise but in some places, it is simply if the sun is rising. This article helps to remind me that I need to make sure I understand the culture I am around to more effectively communicate with them. Also, it makes me wonder if there could be a language that is best for learning or if there would always be drawbacks. Lastly, it makes me wonder why we do not teach children new languages when they are young. I know that other countries do this and have meet people from those countries that know up to seven languages. Our country teaches kids languages in high school when it is proven that learning languages is better when you are around seven.

No one could see the colour blue until modern times

This article goes over a brief history of colors. The main idea is that in old writings there are not colors for things like the sea or the sky, so did they really see blue like we do? This article brings to light many deep questions about any language. It makes me wonder if there are other topics that did not exist until there was a word for it such as emotions. Did people feel all the same emotions we do now even though there was not a word for it? I personally do not think they should have used color for the example of words missing from older languages. Light and color can be measured in their wavelengths so it would not need a name to exist. An example of this would be ultraviolet rays that we are incapable of seeing, but we know they exist because of their wavelengths and frequencies have been recorded.
