When creating content, it is very important to keep a few things in mind. An example of this is an audience. It must be decided who is going to read the content so it can be directed towards them. In our class, we have created web content for a public audience. When writing for a public audience, you must remember that anyone can read what you are writing. What is being written must be entertaining for the readers. Keeping the content entertaining for readers increases the amount someone will read and comprehension. When creating web content, the attention span of the readers should also be kept in mind. It is important to remember the F pattern. Readers are likely to read the first few sentences and then skim over the rest. This means that important information should be kept at the top in less important information towards the bottom.
The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash college has a website called The Activist. This is a great tool for students to post writings that they have created. It is a great place for students to practice their journalism skills. Although what is posted may not be news, it is very similar to the process of journalism. It is good practice for those who want to work with journalism in the future. It gives a place for people to talk about whatever topics they would like other people to hear about. It gives students a place to share their ideas and interests giving them a voice. It is important for there to be a student voice because it can be used to encourage different activities from the students. Also, it can bring light to any concern’s students may have. This helps to enhance the discourse community at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash.
What is done in the activist relates to discourse community. It helps to bring people together in knowledge of a subject or understanding of what is done here in UC Blue Ash. Also, as mentioned in The Concept of Discourse Community, to be a member of a discourse community, one must participate in growing their knowledge and sharing it with others. The Activist is a place someone can go to learn more information about a subject, group, or organization.
The concept of genre is completely reliant on discourse community. Genre is something that is agreed on and repeated by many. It relates to discourse community because without the community, these rules would not be repeated by everyone making the genre. Genre helps with knowledge development because it creates a template that can be used to share information. Without these rules in place it may be difficult to understand how someone has set up there informational writing. With no order created by genre, people would lose interest in reading what others why have to say. Also, effectively creating text is incredibly important for discourse community. It is important for discourse community for the same reason genre is. It helps to organize ideas in the reader’s mind and keeps their attention. It is important to follow the rules of a genre to create an effective writing. The work done by our group displays both effective writing and the use of genre. In our photo caption list, we follow the rules set in place by the examples we saw in photo captions made by others. This allows our photo caption list to maintain the attention of readers and get our point across. We knew the topic would be something that many students could relate to because the majority of them do not have a large amount of money. I strongly agree with the points brought up about using the F model in our writing and believe that our photo caption list follows this.
There are a few values that go along with journalism. One example of these values is supposed to be reliability. Journalism is supposed to share news, and if the news is not reliable, then no one would be able to trust the source unless something big changed. Another value in journalism is Impartiality. This means that the source of news should not take a side in what it is reporting on although it does not have to share both sides. Academic discourse also has its own values. An example of a value is learning. People go to places like college to learn about something they are passionate in. Another example of a value in academic discourse is Passion. If someone is not passionate in what they are learning, they are going to lose interest and struggle to learn. Lastly, an important value is integrity. Without integrity, students will run into many problems when it comes to doing well in school. All these values relate to discourse community because each of these groups are discourse communities.
These same values relate to genre and what we made for the activist because the intent is for people to learn from a reliable source that cares about what they are making. Also, they related to the other works I have done in this class. In blog posts I am sharing my thoughts on what we are doing in class or the work that I have done in class. In my green book, I’m sharing my thoughts on topics we have learned and reflecting on my work. It is strange to think that I am publishing something for many people to see. It shows me that I have the ability to share ideas in thoughts with others. I am also concerned about it. I have no reason to be concerned. I am an introvert so the concept of sharing something with everybody is a little bit unsettling. The publication process is something that is completely new to me. I have created my own works in the past, then turned them in and stopped thinking about it until I got my grade. This experience has made me think about my own work more and how others will perceive it. In the past I ignored the concept of genre but deciding on tags for my own work has made me really think of what the genre of my writing is. I have also never been shown examples of a genre as the only basis for understanding it. I have normally been given criteria for how to write in a genre. This current way of writing in a genre has helped me better understand that genre is not something set in stone but something that I have creative control over. Also discourse community is a new topic to me so my writing has changed because of it. Knowing that I am writing as a part of a discourse community has changed how I think while writing. It helps to give me a better understanding of how to best keep the attention of the reader. Having a goal for who should read my writing helps me to feel more confident that what I am writing has a purpose and will not be ignored.
